Tips and Tricks For Making Dog Treats

Here are a few tips and tricks for for making dog treats that should help when it comes to cooking and baking your own homemade doggie snacks.

1. Find out what your dog really likes. It's always a good idea to bake things that will be appreciated and it's no different when you're baking for your dog. If you know that your dog really loves bacon or cheese look for recipes that contain those ingredients. If you know that your dog doesn't care for garlic, leave it out of the recipes that call for it. There's no rule that says you have to follow a recipe exactly. By choosing recipes that you are reasonably sure your dog will like you are doing both yourself and your dog a favor.

2. Before you begin cooking make sure you have all of the cookware and ingredients you need. This will save you from having to stop in the middle of cooking to run out and get something. And we all know if you leave your ingredients on the counter your dog is likely to eat them before you finish cooking them!

3. You can make dog cookies look nicer by cutting them out into dog biscuit shapes. It's not hard to find dog bone-shaped cookie cutters either online or at pet supply stores. You can also find cookie cutters in the shape of dogs or other doggie items. Check kitchen supply stores and online kitchen sites. Your dog may not really care but they're very cute. You may want to go to this extra trouble if you're giving the cookies as gifts or planning to have them at a doggie party.

You can also cut out cardboard shapes of bones or dogs to use as guidelines when you cut out shapes in the cookie dough.

4. You can make some dog treat recipes more interesting by adding some parmesan cheese to the tops of the treats. Most dogs love parmesan and it goes well with many recipes.

5. Keep in mind that many kinds of dog cookies freeze well so it's easy to make a large batch at one time and freeze it. Try filling up a doggie treat bag with the just-baked cookies and popping it in the freezer, or fill up several treat bags. That way you'll have treats ready for your dog whenever you need them.

6. You can also make easy treats for your dog by baking a piece of chicken and slicing it into small bits. Or, try slicing a hotdog into small bits and putting it in the microwave to nuke it. These are both popular treats for dogs. Another good treat for dogs - and one that's very easy to make - is baking a piece of liver on low in your over (about 200 degrees F) for a couple of hours. Allow the liver to cook until it's very dry and then cut it into small pieces. These liver bits make excellent training treats.

You can also use popcorn as a great training treat. Most dogs love popcorn and it's very low-cal. Popcorn is great for dogs who are trying to lose a little weight.

Use these tips to make treats and cookies that your dog will love. Use your imagination and try to make the things that your dog loves. Remember that your dog doesn't care if you give him hotdog bits or gourmet dog cookies. He just likes the treats you make for him.
